Luciano Pietronero joins LIMS Board of Directors
Luciano Pietronero is professor of physics at the University of Rome "Sapienza” and director of the Institute of Complex Systems, CNR. His research interests include applications of statistical physics in astrophysics, seismology, networks, biophysics and socio-economics.

Thomas Tombrello joins LIMS Board of Directors
Thomas Tombrello is professor of physics at the California Institute of Technology. For the last ten years he served as Chair of the Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy. His research interests include materials science, surface physics and planetary science.

Jamie Blundell begins postdoc at LIMS
Jamie Blundell read physics at the University of Cambridge and is finishing his PhD in there at the Cavendish Laboratory. He will join LIMS in the autumn. His research interests include statistical mechanics and polymer physics.

Elizabeth Forrester heads LIMS development office
Elizabeth Forrester has worked in development and fundraising at Caltech and Westminster diocese. She will oversee LIMS’s endowments and capital fundraising appeal and private and corporate donations.

Robert Farr elected Visiting Fellow of LIMS
Robert Farr spent seven years at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, where he won the Clerk Maxwell University Prize. He is now a research scientist at Unilever. His research interests include statistical mechanics, fractal materials, granular systems and geometrical packing.

A networked world
In the lead article of the February issue of Physics World, Mark Buchanan and Guido Caldarelli chart the remarkable rise of network science, examine why it has become so popular, and predict what its future may bring.

Alexis Gallagher begins postdoc at LIMS
Alex Gallagher read physics at Harvard University and did his PhD at the University of Oxford. He joined LIMS in early 2010. His research interests include formal models of evolvability.

Thomas Goode and Co. make major donation
In a generous show of support for LIMS and its work, Thomas Goode and Co., the Mayfair china shop and property owner, has indefinitely donated a five-floor, grade II* listed building. The new premises will help house the Institute’s rapidly expanding team of scientists and staff.

Guido Caldarelli elected Fellow of LIMS
Guido Caldarelli is an associate professor of physics in the Italian CNR (Institute for Complex Systems) and a  visiting scientist at ETH Zurich. His research interests are scale-free networks, statistical mechanics and systems biology.

John Harer joins LIMS Board of Directors
John Harer is professor of mathematics at Duke University. He served as Chair of the Mathematics Department and Vice-Provost for Academic Affairs. His research interests are low-dimensional topology, network dynamics and computational topology.
